Solved Area Problems

Solved Area Problems

Dear Reader,
Below are four problems dealing with area of square and rectangles.
Question 1
The number of tiles of length 60 cm and breadth 40 cm were needed to pave the floor of a square room of length 6 meters is:
a) 120 b) 140 c) 150 d) 159
Answer : c) 150.
Solution :
Length of the floor = 6 m = 600 cm
Area of the floor = 6002 x m2 = 600 x 600 cm2
Length of each tile = 60 cm and breadth = 40cm
Area of each tile = 60 x 40 cm2
Number of tiles required to pave the floor = area of the floor / area of each tile
= 600 x 600 / 40 x 60 = 3600 / 24 = 150.
Question 2
If 100 square marbles of equal size were required to pave a floor of dimension 6m x 24m then the length of each marble is:
a) 120 cm b) 144 cm c) 250cm d) 100 cm
Answer : a) 120 cm.
Solution :
Dimension of the floor = 6m x 24 m
Area of the floor = 6 x 24 m2.
It is given that, 100 square marbles are needed to cover the floor of area 6 x 24 m2.
Area of each marble = 6 x 24 / 100 m2= 144 / 100 m2 = 1.44 m2
Since the marbles are in square shape, the length of each marble = sqrt(1.44) m = 1.2 m
Hence the answer is 1.2m = 1.2 x 100 cm = 120 cm.
Question 3
A man want to pave the floor of a room of length 30m 34 cm and 18m 4cm breadth; the minimum number of square marbles needed for him is:
a) 922 b) 291 c) 814 d) 628
Answer : c) 814
Solution :
Length of the room = 30m and 34 cm = 30 x 100 + 34 cm = 3034 cm
And, breadth = 18 m and 4 cm = 18 x 100 + 4 cm = 1804 cm
We have to find minimum number of marbles; so, the length of each marble will be the possible largest unit.
Length of largest marble = HCF (3034, 1804) cm = 82 cm.
Area of each marble = 82 x 82 cm2.
Now, the required number of marbles = area of the floor / area of each tile = (3034 x 1804) / (82 x 82) = 814.
Hence the required number of marbles = 814.
Question 4
The dimension of a rectangular floor of a room is 10m x 5m. The owner want to pave the floor by equal number of 2 different color square marbles of length 1m. If he uses green and white color marbles then the number of green color marbles is:
a) 50 b) 25 c)100 d) 75
Answer : b) 25.
Solution :
Dimension of the floor = 10m x 5m
Area of the floor = 5 x 10 m2 = 50m2.
Length of each square marble = 1 m
Then its area = 1 m2.
Total number of green and white color marbles = Area of the floor / area of each marble
= 50/1 = 50
Number of green color marbles required = 50/2 = 25.

Number Problems

Number Problems

Dear Reader,
Below are four problems based on number system, dealing with some exact divisions.
Question 1
The least number to be added to 3545 so that 65 divides the result exactly is:
a) 50 b) 40 c) 30 d) 20
Answer : c) 30
Solution :
On dividing 3545 by 65, we get remainder 35.
i.e., 3545 = 54x65 + 35.
Therefore, the required number to be added = 65 - 35 = 30.
To check, 3545 + 30 = 3575 = 55 x 65.
Question 2
Which of the following number should be added to 28614 in order to obtain a multiple of 87?
a) 17 b) 12 c) 14 d) 9
Answer : d) 9.
Solution :
On dividing the given number 28614 by 87, we have the remainder = 78.
i.e., 328x87 + 78 = 28614.
Therefore, the required number to be added = 87 - 78 = 9
To check, 28614 + 9 = 28623 = 329x87.
Question 3
What will be the smallest number that must be subtracted from 24305 so that the remainder is exactly divisible by 54?
a) 11 b) 5 c) 7 d) 9
Answer : b) 5
Solution :
On dividing the given number 24305 by 54, we have the remainder = 5.
i.e., 450x54 + 5 = 24305
450x54 = 24305 - 5.
Therefore, the required number to be subtracted = 5
Question 4
What is the least number by which 84 must be multiplied in order to produce a multiple of 128?
a) 32 b) 44 c) 56 d) 68
Answer : a) 32
Solution :
Let the required number be X.
Then, X x 84 is a multiple of 128.
Therefore, X x 84 is a multiple of both 128 and 84.
i.e., LCM of 84 and 128.
LCM of 84 and 128 is 2688.
i.e., the least number which is the multiple of both 84 and 128 is 2688.
Now, X x 84 = 2688
X = 2688/84 = 32.

Simple Interest Problems

Simple Interest Problems

Dear Reader,
Below are four problems on simple interest with calculations on principal, rate and time duration.
Question 1
A man lent out Rs.9600 at 9/2 % per annum for a year and 9 months. At the end of the duration, the amount he earned as S.I was:
a) Rs. 567 b) Rs.756 c) Rs.874 d) Rs.784
Answer : b) Rs.756
Solution :
Given that, principal = P = Rs.9600, R = 9/2 % and T = 1 year and 9 months = 1 + 9/12 year = 7/4 years.
Now, we have to find the S.I for 7/4 years.
S.I = PRT/100 = Rs. 9600 x 9/2 x 7/4 x 1/100 = 12 x 9 x 7 = 756
Hence, the required S.I amount is Rs.756
Question 2
A man borrowed Rs.33600 at 25/4 % per annum on September 2012 and he paid back in May 2013. Find the amount he paid as S.I.
a) Rs.2075 b) Rs.2575 c) Rs.1575 d) Rs.1975
Answer : c) Rs.1575.
Solution :
Given that, principal = P = Rs. 33600 and R = 25/4 %.
Time duration = From September 2012 to May 2013 = 9 months = 9/12 year = 3/4 year.
S.I = PRT/100 = Rs. 33600 x 25/4 x 3/4 x 1/100 = 21 x 25 x 3 = Rs.1575.
Hence, the answer is Rs.1575.
Question 3
How much time will it take for a sum of Rs. 9000 to yield Rs. 1620 as S.I at 4 1/2 % per annum?
a) 1 year b) 2 years c) 3 years d) 4 years
Answer : d) 4years.
Solution :
Given that, Principal = P = Rs. 9000, S.I = Rs. 1620 and rate R = 4 1/2 % = 9/2 %
We have to find T.
T = S.I x 100/PR = 1620 x 100/9000 x (9/2)
= 162x2 / 9x9 = 4
Therefore, required time is 4 years.
Question 4
At what rate of simple interest, a sum of Rs.8540 amounts to Rs.9710 in 3 years?
a) 3 1/2 % b) 2 1/4 % c) 3 3/4 % d) 4 1/2 %
Answer : d) 4 1/2 %
Solution :
Given that, principal = P = Rs. 8540
Final amount = Rs. 9710
Then, interest = S.I = Rs.9710 – Rs.8540 = Rs. 1170.
Time = T = 3 years.
Required rate = R = S.I x 100 / PxT = 1170 x 100 / 8540 x 3 = 1950/427
= 4.566 = 4.5 (approximately) = 9/2 = 4 1/2 %
Hence, the answer is 4 1/2 %.
