NATIONALISED BANKS :::---------
- Banks which were earlier in private sector, which later converted
into government sectors are known as nationalised banks.- First nationalisation of banks was done in 1969 at the time of Indira Gandhi.- 14 Banks were nationalised in 1969 with minimum capital of Rs. 50 crore was mandatory.- Later in 1980, six big banks were also nationalised with minimum capital of Rs. 200 crore was mandatory for them.- In 1993, "New bank of India" was merged with "Punjab national Bank".Hence, presently 19 banks are nationalised.- Industrial development banks of India (IDBI) is included in government sector banks.So, SBI (1+5)Nationalised banks (1+19)Total public sector banks = 26NOTE : All nationalised banks are government sector banks, but all government sector banks are not nationalised.
